Add alt - A Wordpress plugin

2007-12-15 18:41 | Categories » English, Internet, Webb, Wordpress, Wordpress plugin,

This is a very simple Wordpress plugin that has one single purpose, to add empty alt attributes to the images in your Wordpress posts that lacks one. Since TinyMCE doesn’t add a alt attribute if you empty the alt field it breaks validation. It can be a bit frustrating to add them manually in Wordpress, now you’ll never have to do that again.

Download Add alt

Tested with Wordpress version: 2.3 - 2.5
Current version: 1.0.1

Installation

  1. Upload addalt.php to your Wordpress plugin directory (/wp-content/plugins/)
  2. Activate “Add alt” through your Wordpress Plugin page
  3. Smile

And there is more…

If you are in the mood for trying out the latest plugin for embedding videos, give Video Embedder a try!

Feedback

Have you encountered a bug? Don’t hesitate to leave a comment and I’ll try to fix it as soon as possible. Have you tested the plugin on some other version of Wordpress, let me know if it works.

Spread the word! :)

Nice idea! I do it all manually at the moment. Any chance you could add the image name in the alt attribute rather than leave it empty? That’d be nicer if the images have descriptive names - it’d be better for accessibility as well as validation. Any, well done.

Stephen Cronin: Thanks! :)

Sure, I’ll add that in the next version which should be released any day now. :D

This a neat idea! I’ve thought about this as well, since the validator gets all bunched up over something this small but important.

MrCorey: Originally I was going to add the alt attribute manually to all of my images, but I soon decided that a plugin was the way to go. Much less work required… :P

Nice that other people find it useful too! :)

Is there a way you could have the alt default to the image title instead of leaving it empty? Or does it do that?

Leanne: Sure, that should be possible to add I guess… :) Keep your eyes open for the next release.
