Video Embedder – Embed videos in your WordPress blog

2007-12-17 01:40 | Categories » English, Webb, Wordpress, Wordpress plugin,

Video EmbedderThis is a plugin for WordPress that makes it easy to embed movies from various sources, such as YouTube and Google Video. The benefit with this plugin is that you don’t have to paste some strange video embed code into your WordPress post, all you need is the ID of the video. As a bonus none of the videos embedded with Video Embedder will break your precious validated WordPress based site, all of the movies will show up nice and clean.

Another advantage is that you can manage the settings for all of your embedded movies from the WordPress settings for Video Embedder, the properties for all the movies will be updated instantly as soon as you save the settings.

Have you changed the layout for your WordPress blog? No sweat, Video Embedder makes it a breeze to change the dimensions of all your embedded videos no matter what service they are embedded from.

Are you using another WordPress plugin for managing your YouTube movies or any of the other services that Video Embedder has support for today? Most likely it is very easy to make Video Embedder take care of those videos as well. Just edit the tag Video Embedder uses to match your old plugin and you are done.

Alice: Thanks for your kind comment! :) Nice to hear that the plugin fitted your needs. And remember… If you feel that a video service should be added, let me know and I’ll see what I can do! =)

Gamma: If you go to the settings for the plugin and have a look at the tags and the help section i hope the instructions there will answer some of the questions. When you write a post you simply enclose the ID for the video you want to embed within the tag. For a Youtube movie that could look something like: [youtube]zORv8wwiadQ[/youtube]. I have added a screenshot above that demonstrates it too. I will make the instructions a little bit more clearer in the next version. Don’t hesitate to ask again if you encounter any problem! :)

Dave: They will most likely be included in next version of Video Embedder! :)

Pook: Thanks for the comment, I’m glad the plugin fitted your needs! :)

Oh and, merry x-mas and happy holidays to all of you! :D

i have one plugin now (anarchy player? or vipers video i think) that allows youtube, etc, but the good part is it allows me to post quicktime files that i have hosted on my own server. i’d love to see quicktime functionality in your plugin if possible, cuz viper’s video may post youtube but it does break the page up oddly, even tho you can change sizes of the video.

thanks for your work.

Don’t know if I am the only one with this problem but after I installed and activated the plugin I inserted the code to play a mediaplayerfile which was located on another server. Right after I inserted the code in a post and published it my site layout ”broke” when I tried to view that post. Then I tried to add the code directly in my sidebar.php but nothing happened when I viewed my website.
Any idea what could be wrong?

Gravatar
|
Kristoffer — 2007-12-30 02:57

Robin: Sounds strange… I just tested the same scenario you described, but I didn’t bump into the problem you described. Everything looked just the way it was supposed to do. Does it matter what browser you use? A link to the post would help a lot! :)

The tags for Video Embedder must be placed in a post or page.

Tack!

Is there any reason it shouldn’t work on 2.1.3 (yeah, I should update)?

Also, is there a way to override the size settings for a particular post. I found that some QT spilled over (with the stat button) on left/right when I had my preferred YouTube-setting (500×418)?

On a wishlist is also Jaycut support. Not a biggie.

Is it possible to make it now autoplay?
But that people need to click play, always before it loads?

I would like to know if it is very hard to add a button to the WYSIWYG editor in WP. Could you consider this for your next release? I think it would be great, you’d click the button, some pop-up would open and let you select the video service and let you type the video ID (or the whole URL for easyness).
What do you think?

Thanks again, Keep it up!

I am trying to use the Quicktime Video plugin, and I have 10 or 20 or 30 videos on one page. Is there a way I can make the videos only load when someone hits play?

Another thing is that I was wondering if you would put in an audio player into this, and maybe a playlist? I have looked around the internet and have found nothing to this.

Otherwise this is an amazing plugin and I wish you to continue to add more to this.

Guy: Thanks! Vimeo support added :)

Chris: I’m glad to hear that you like the plugin! I’ve added Gametrailers support to Video Embedder. The problems with Internet Explorer sounds strange, I hope you solved it.

Nikohk , The Blogger Tips and Kelly: Thank you! =)

Manish: Just upload the video with WordPress built-in uploader and then enclose the url to the video in the same way described in Video Embedder help section (found below the settings) :)

firstpressing: Thank you! :) Video Embedder has support for Gametrailers now. I’ll see if I can add support for Gamevideos in the future.

Sam: I’ll try to add support for them in the future.

Drew V.: Yes, but there is some problems with their embeddable player, I’ll add the support as soon as I figured out a way to solve it nice and cleanly.

Simon Sundén: I’m happy to hear that you liked the plugin, thanks! I’ve added Viddler support now aswell.

Michelle Vandepas: Currently Video Embedder hasn’t got support for that service, but I’ll see what I can do.

Tom: Thanks a lot! =)

onews: Strange, they work just fine here… Could you show me a post where you have trouble with the embedding? The link you posted works like a charm when I try to embed it.

Dave: Sure thing, Snotr support added in the latest version of Video Embedder :)

Your apologies are accepted =)

In what way did you have problems with Video Embedder? There is a help section in Video Embedders settings.

I am currently using vpip for wordpress but I have changed my theme the the video area’s through vpip is far too big. Is it possible to use this plugin to manipulate my current vpip installation to a standard area size for all movies. This would save me from having to go back and changing the areas on each and everyone. from now on I will be using video embedder its a great plugin.

Hi,

Very good stuff.
Could you please add 2 things in your plugin :

- beeing able to add a default ”picture” so you see something if the movie is starting from black (or white).
- beeing able to resize the per movie.

I’m not sure the architecture of your plugin will allow this, but I hope :)

Thanks for the great plugin. I cannot seem to get gametrailers working. The video works fine if I use the supplied embedded code

But if I use [gtrailer]167887[/gtrailer] the video is not found. The player loads, but doesn’t load the video.

Any ideas on how to solve this? Is it just me or are others having the same problem?

Thanks,

Chris.

This is really an awesome plugin but sadly for me I use megavideo a lot, adding that would be most appreciated. (www.megavideo.com)

Also if possible if you can integrate this with http://www.jeroenwijering.com/?item=JW_FLV_Media_Player so we can use a different player then the one’s that are standard with the embed (some of the site’s have ultra ugly embed players, and some lack fullscreen features).
If you can get that working with at least Veoh, Megavideo, MyspaceTV, and dailymotion you can expect a donation as guess what i’ll be using this for my site :) If you can only do this as a custom job feel free to email me or reply on here if you need my email.

The last feature request is something that show’s if the embedded video is DEAD or Broken as we know video site’s tend to enjoy deleting video’s and the last thing we want is for our visitors to go elsewhere to get their news/content.

Thanks for the awesome plugin and looking forward to any reply.

When you embed a blip.tv video it automatically makes the player link to http://creationsnet.blip.tv/ I had to go into the plugin and edit this myself. I think by default it should at least link to blip.tv not someone else’s show.

I’m thinking of downloading your video embedder, but I’m not certain that it suits my needs. Maybe you could answer me on that point or give me a clue of where I can find that I’m looking for: I want to be able to publish own movies on my website without having to show (for example) Youtube’s logo in the media player. So, does your video embedder by any chance make this possible? Or do you know of any plug-in for WordPress that allows people to post movies directly on the website?

Cheers
Louise

I love this plug in and been using it forever, but like some of the earlier commenter’s, I’m also having an issue with Google Reader ignoring the video included in the feed.

I’m suing v1.6 with WordPress 2.5.1, RSS 2.0 with full text output to the feed. But the issue has been there for a while, and before I upgraded to WP2.5.

Any suggestions?

Thanks and keep up the great work.

First of all, thanks everybody! Sorry for taking such a time to reply, it has been a little much work in school…

Rajab Bader: That feature doesn’t exist yet, but I will keep it in my mind! =)

Christian: Nice to hear that you found it useful!

Chris: I will look into that, if it is possible and practical I’ll include it =)

Flabuless: Currently Video Embedder doesn’t have any ability to manipulate vpip content. I’m happy to hear that you liked Video Embedder! =)

Prune: I’ll have a look at both features, thanks for the input!

Tolix: Wow, I feel flattered! Thanks a lot! :)

Chris: I’ll fix that in the next version, thanks for your report!

Rude Retro: Funny or Die will most likely be included in the next version of Video Embedder.

Adrien: I’ll look into that. Thanks for your input!

gosassin: I’ll see if I can add that service to Video Embedder. Thanks!

IanFJ: I’m glad to hear that Video Embedder fitted your needs! =)

Vicky: Some services is a little bit more tricky than others. I really will try to add support for Overstream as well! =)

Psidude: I will have a look at them. Thanks for the input!

Colin: Oops… I’ll smack that bug in the next update. Thanks a lot for your report!

Louise: You can use Video Embedder for playing local media, such as Window Media Videos or Quicktime movies. In that case you just upload the video and then enter the path between the appropriate tags. You can find further instructions in the settings for Video Embedder. I hope that solves your problems.

Andreas: Tack så mycket! Trevligt att höra att du gillade Video Embedder! =)

Matt: Probably. I’ll have a look at it! =)

Phil: I’ll give it a try. Thanks for the input!

Dee: I will have a look at that, thanks for your report!

Erik, Kintaro and Kallie: I can have a look at those services. If it is possible I will add them to Video Embedder.

Your example shows how to embed Youtube and Google videos, evidently by automatically going to the Youtube or Google site. In that case, it is not necessary to give the address of the site from which tthe video is being retrieved. For a video stored on my own site, how do I indicate the address of the video file?

Also, will your plug-in work with generic .mp4 files (which I can generate using QuickTime, but which offer me more flexibility in configuration than with .mov files)?

I want the videos to play on all systems and so I don’t want them to point to a particular player. Will your plugin work with any player i any operating system configured to play a particular file type, say .mov, .wma or .mp4? There are, for example, many different players whih play .mp4.

I found the answer to my question! To get the Vimeo full screen button in the embedded player to work I just added two lines to the plugin for the Flash part.

$object .= ”;
$object .= ”;

And that’s that :) Not sure if the ‘allowscriptaccess’ is actually needed, but that’s what you get from the Vimeo site when asking for embed code.

hey, great plug in, any chance of a flv player?
Scenario:
I don’t like little watermarked logo on embedded video sites, like youtube and alike, or I’m posting video on a corporate site, but I would like using a flv video with a flv player (I’m sure there must be one open source out there that can somehow be integrated).

Solution:
a way of embedding a locally stored video in flv with a customizable look.

This i guess is a lot of work, but maybe you can create a way of people to integrate site’s support so you can focus on features like the described above.

Thanks a lot

Adblock removes all videos embedded with this excellent tool for some reason. Doesn’t even leave a hint that a vid is posted, so my readers wonders sometimes what the hell I’m going on about. Regardless if the page it’s on is whitelisted, btw, the only way to watch it on my site is to disable and remove adblock completely. Which isn’t the greatest of options… Any information on this subject, hints or tips on how to fix that?

”Hi, Great plugin but I’ve noticed that Youtube videos no longer show up in the RSS feed when viewing it using Google Reader. Any idea what might be causing that?”

I just found out that I have the same problem. My feed on Google Reader no longer shows the youtube or any other videos in Reader, though I can see them fine in the RSS feed itself. This does not happen when I embed videos normally with the object/embed code. Do you have any idea what’s causing this behavior and maybe have a workaround? I understand from your previous reply that the main cause of the problem is on Google’s side, but with a lot of readers of my blog using Google Reader this is rather problematic…

Hi 1st, great plugin! Great! My question, and any help would be great!
I would like to use your video embedded plugin, so that I can add my own videos in the side bar of my blog, basically just like it works with utube but I would like to be able to host my own videos on my own server and have your plugin play them, is there anyway to do this?

If so what steps are needed.. thank u for the time and help

It’d be awesome to embed your own FLV files also. I’d say a sorely needed feature that many video plugins are missing, is the ability to set the WMODE option when embedding video. Lots of people are using video embeds AND using something like Litebox to do pictures, and lots of times the video shows up over an image because of bad z-indexing.

Something like [ youtube &w=500&h=250 ] in the tag for example.

Hi, thanks for the plugin. I hope it will solve my issue: I want a video embedder to work OUTSIDE of the posts.

I want to embed a permanent video window in my sidebar template, and feed URLs to it, which I could enter manually via the admin section of the plugin.

Here is the site:

http://www.rockcanada.org/1

The video on the top right is hard-coded HTML, but the client wants to have more than one video, and be able to edit the list as he wants. And this is pretty much the last thing to do before launching the site… :)

Thanks for any help!

This is a really great plugin – I finally found one that works properly.
Anarchy Media Player was good, but I couldn’t change the default image when not playing, and it’s now unsupported.
Embedded-Video was good, but it’s also unsupported and it applied the same width and height to every video and some squishing/cropping occurred.
This one handles those problems well. However it would be great if you add a WYSIWYG button to the TinyMCE editor in WP as those others had.

Embedded Video was the best in this regard, allowing you to choose an off-site video (youtube etc), a local video from your server (wp uploads directory), a local video from anywhere else on your server (eg: http://blah.com/downloads/video.avi) or to upload a video on the spot.

It would be great if those extensions could be made to make this plugin even better.

Nice work.

Thanks again for all your work on this plugin. I use it extensively.

I was talking to an iPhone user and he mentioned that YouTube videos embedded with Video Embedder did not load as normal embedded YT videos would – apparently Mobile Safari does not support Flash but when it encounters a quicktime movie or embedded YouTube video it opens the iPhone’s YouTube app to play the video. QT and YT videos embedded through the plugin break this functionality, showing the normal unsupported Flash icon. Would it be possible to restore this functionality?

Hi,

I love your plugin and have used it in many of my projects.

I am currently working on a project that requires me to write a custom function file with options in the admin for the client to enter. Then the options show in the website that are not in the main content area. I tried to use your plugin so the client can just enter the youtube number for the video then it would appear in the website where the option is calling. However, it just shows the code and not the video.

Is there a php function call that would allow to use this plugin in the php page and not in the actual content box?

Thanks,
Steve

2) Click this image
3) It’s replaced by the video which then plays.

YouTube, for example, gives no control over the image that’s displayed.

This is great!!!

I’m wondering if there is a way to specify the frame dimensions for each different post; I’m converting a video site with lots of different sized video, (quicktime) and would love to be able to do this:)

For Vimeo it is necessary to add this code:

that video was shown from a blog on the full screen

Say, how make it?

Thx you ;)

Would it be possible to add the possibility to embed comparison tables from http://socialcompare.com ?

I know that it is not video, but it could be very nice to be able to embed various services.

What do you think ?

Thanks for your feedback;

Kristoffer-

I’ve got WordPress installed on my server (not sure if that’s relevant). I can’t get the video window to be the right size. Even after changing the width and height and saving, it still shows up as a half screen. I also changed the default embed size within WordPress, but got the same result. What’s the solution?

Also, naive question: how do you get video IDs from youtube and other sites?

Thanks.

Hi Kristoffer,

I use your great plugin Video Embedder in a TDO Mini Form in front-page.
Users easily embed videos, because of you. Thank you!
I put a upload files under TDO Mini Form to get featured pictures to their posts but users don’t care of that.

Then i tried to use, Auto Featured Image, that works fine with the classic embed method.
But not with Video Embedder! arg

So, could you get eye on Auto Featured Image, to see how it work and i wondering if you could do a mashup of both.
In this way every people like me could stay working with your great and easy way Video Embedder plugin.

Thank you
Gerald
